Sesquicentennial Dinner 2022

29 October, 2022

$80 - $125

Guest Speaker: John Coates AC

Master of Ceremonies: Islay Lee

We are at last able to conduct the long-delayed dinner to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the founding of Sydney Rowing Club. The club was established in 1870, with the first boatshed constructed on the site that is now occupied by the Sydney Opera House. The club’s Board planned to celebrate the Sesquicentenary of the club by running a Sesquicentennial Dinner in 2020 but the pandemic made this impossible. With Covid-19 concerns now greatly reduced, we can go ahead.

We will drink a toast or two to the founders of the club and celebrate the club’s achievements over the period since 1870. Our focus however will be on the future, and guest speaker John Coates AC will be able to talk about the future direction of the Olympic movement and the forthcoming return of the Olympics to Australia in Brisbane in 2032.

John Coates recently stepped down after 32 years as president of the Australian Olympic Committee and remains a vice-president of the International Olympic Committee. Islay Lee competed in the men’s eight at the 1976 and 1980 Olympics.
